Badminton Season 2019 Recap – Womens Singles

First Big Title For Eternal Silver Medalist P.V. Sindhu – Chen Yufei Emerging

The dominator of 2017 and 2018 is still going strong. But once again the Big Trophy (a.k.a. World Champion) didn`t happen for the girl from Chinese Taipeh Tai Tzu Ying. It seems like in 2019 its not all on her racket anymore. The competition has adjusted to her deceiptions a little and she is making a few too many unforced errors. That is why she was only runner-up in three big finals. And on the biggest stage of world championships she lost a very close match to the eventual winner P.V. Sindhu. So she still has the game to succeed and I believe in 2020 it has to happen for her or it never will and she will go down somewhat as a wasted talent.

Sindhu Makes Next Step

So Indian superstar Sindhu finally got her deserved gold medal after many silver ones. Chinese Chen Yu Fei climbed to the top of the rankings and established herself as the woman to beat with victories at the All England Open and the BFW World Tour Finals. She would be my pick for Gold in Tokyo 2020. Very good mix of offense and defense she has.

Olympic champion Carolina Marin unfortunately had lots of trouble with injuries, but came back with a roar to win the Victor China Open out of nowwhere. The Spaniard is certainly a force to be reckoned in 2020. The two Japanese top women Okuhara and Yamaguchi will surely aim for Gold in front of their homecrowd. But 2019 was just ok for them and their lack of attacking weapons maked me think that it won`t happen for them.

A New Threat For Top Stars?

A dark horse for Olympic Gold despite her very young age might be Korean prodigy An Se Young. She seems very mature already and won the French Open. If she continues to develop her game that fast, she will be a threat in Tokyo. I am definitely looking forward to the next season. Especially the Womens Singles category is in a very healthy state currently with many players of various nations being able to compete for the titles.
